Plainville police have arrested and charged a man for abusing his girlfriend’s two-year-old son.

According to a press release from the Plainville Police Department, a woman told officers earlier this month that her live-in boyfriend, 20-year-old Jacob Matthews of Plainville, was physically abusing her son. Early in the investigation, officers observed bruising on the child’s face, head, hips and genitalia, the release said. A subsequent examination by the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center concluded that the bruising was consistent with child abuse, the release said.  The child involved in the incident is currently in the care of the Department of Children and Families, the release said.

Based on the findings of the investigation, Matthews, who is not the father of the child, was charged with risk of injury to a minor, cruelty to persons, third degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was arrested without incident yesterday during a traffic stop, and was held on a $75,000 bond, the release said. He was scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court today.
